Administration Launches Sponsorship-Based Refugee Program

The State Department will administrate the Welcome Corps initiative.

President Biden’s administration launched the Welcome Corps initiative this week. The new refugee program lets U.S. citizens and permanent residents nominate specific people to be allowed into the country. The program will be administered by the State Department, which will process refugee requests filed by groups of five or more citizens advocating for the reunification of families or international communities.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Sarah Cross, of the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, said that the Welcome Corps sponsorships make it easier for Americans who want to aid certain refugees.

“This program taps into the tremendous capacity and willingness of our communities to help people arrive in safe, orderly, and legal ways with the support that they need, which should appeal to any administration,” Deputy Assistant Secretary Cross said.
